Hi, I'm Julie, the proprietor of Thistle Piping. I have been self employed since 1999 and won several awards for my wedding services. I have a few loves in life which are music, the outdoors and whisky.... although I ration the latter for obvious reasons! Im the Pipe Major of a grade 2 band in Aberdeen and we actively compete at all major championships in the UK. In 2022 I was appointed as the official piper to the Lord Provost of Aberdeen and I was presented with a City Crest Pipe Banner and arm badges with the Aberdeen City Crest - a proud moment. I have piped for Queen Elizabeth II on several occasions over the years and also more recently I welcomed King Charles III to Aberdeen on his first visit to the city after his ascension to the throne. I teach the bagpipes and have several strands to this in the form of being the Visiting Tutor for Bagpipes at the University of Aberdeen, A Visiting Tutor for Bagpipes at Robert Gordons College and I also have my own private pupils who are under the tutelage of my own process and book developed over many years of piping and tutoring. In 2023 I plan to launch my own book of pipe tunes which will feature many of my own compositions as well as the compositions of other local pipers who I have known in our community for many years. When I'm not piping or sampling a fancy whisky, I love to be out on my road bike and enjoy planning a 40 mile route in the countryside entirely under my own pedal power. I am also a cat lover and have a wee furry friend who I recently adopted after he was abandoned in the area. He's known as JoJo but I really should have named him after a wee whisky on hindsight! I hope you've enjoyed hearing a wee bit about me. Please get in touch if you are interested in hearing a bit more about booking me. Julie

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Customer feedback would say a combination between entertaining the guests in a fun way and also that the quality of the performances is what "good pipes" should sound like! ( I definitely don't want to sound like a poor piper - they are out there! - beware!)

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I regularly perform at all of the major Hotels, castles and venues in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. I am well known in the area.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

This is impossible to answer as a bagpipe player. I listen to all sorts of music like ceilidh music, country music, popular music, pipe band music! I am influenced by good technique and progressive key changes!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I recently piped for King Charles III on his first visit to Aberdeen City after his ascension to the throne. This had a lot of media interest. The largest crowd I have piped for was probably "The Script" on tour and I performed on stage with them for one of their tracks. It was absolutely fantastic with thousands of fans in very close proximity.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

So long as your booking doesn't change dramatically then this can be adjusted as plans take shape. We expect adjustments along the way, just let me know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can pull a play list together if required and have equipment to do this if it's needed.

How much time do you need to set up?

Not long at all! I usually arrive 20/30 mins before I need to start playing which is plenty time. If it's a new venue then I will go along a bit earlier.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Yes, I am happy to take requests where possible

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes I take everything that I need.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

I can learn requested pieces before an event so long as the piece is playable on the bagpipes. Not all tunes work so it would depend on the request itself. Happy to try though.
